Antônio Marcos do Carmo began farming coffee following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Originally from Paraná state, he moved to Cerrado Mineiro in 2003 to leave behind the nematode epidemic that was plaguing crops in the area. He settled in the municipality of Guimarania in the Chapadão de Ferro microregion, moving production to his new farm, Fazenda Caixetas, with the intention of producing high quality coffee.
Within Cerrado there are many microregions that present unique characteristics in the cup. The Chapadão de Ferro microregion, where Fazenda Caixetas can be found, is a small town with farms situated around the cone of a partially formed volcano. Farms here are at higher elevations above 1100 meters and coffee is harvested a month or two later than in other parts of Cerrado Mineiro.
Antônio now farms 44 hectares of coffee across his 63 hectare property. He adheres to selective harvesting and careful drying practices, ensuring that the quality and terroir of his crop is brought to their full potential. As of October 2019, the Fazenda Caixetas became part of the Cerrado Mineiro Designation of Origin program. Coffees from the farm are all labeled with a seal of origin and quality, which indicates their full traceability and adherence to the standards of the Cerrado Coffee Growers Federation, which requires sustainable and equitable farming practices and evaluates each lot to ensure quality.
